XRP Ledger: Liquidity & Implied Price Model

A framework for reasoning about how much value would have to settle through XRP as a bridge asset, and the approximate price XRP would need to support that daily liquidity.

The Bridge-Asset Thesis

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) can be used to move value between currencies and assets. When liquidity flows across the ledger, XRP can act as a neutral bridge asset sitting between the two sides of a trade. The question this page explores is simple:

If some portion of global settlement volume routed through XRP every day, what price would XRP need to be to support it?

The intuition: a pool of usable XRP has to "carry" a daily volume of transactions. The larger the volume, and the fewer times each XRP can be reused in a day, the higher the price per XRP has to be for the pool to hold that much value in motion.

Today only a small amount of real payment flow uses XRP as the bridge (see What Flows Through XRP Today in the full thesis). Everything beyond that is a scenario you choose. Figures on this page were checked against their sources on 2026-09-24.

The Formula

Price is the liquidity depth XRP must provide, divided by the float actually available to provide it:

Implied XRP Price = ( Daily Liquidity × Depth Buffer ) ÷ ( Available Float × Daily Recycling )

Worked example with illustrative inputs: $5 trillion/day, a 2× depth buffer, 10B available float, recycled 10×:

( $5,000,000,000,000 × 2 ) ÷ ( 10,000,000,000 × 10 ) = $100.00 per XRP

A small available float and a depth buffer push the price up; faster recycling pushes it down. This is our model built on Claver's reasoning, not his published formula. Market cap (price × circulating supply) is shown only as a sanity check, since per Claver it overstates a thin-float asset.

Daily liquidity captured

Auto-calculated: the checked venues below plus your custom amount. This value drives the calculation.
Optional. Added on top of the checked venues.
Mark venues with an × to include, then tune each venue's capture %. Live on-XRPL venues are on by default (they already touch the ledger); speculated markets start off, since they aren't flowing through XRP. Check them to model capturing that flow.

Institutional FX, SWIFT, cross-border B2B and remittances are views of the same cross-border money at different widths, and card payments settle over the retail rails. You can combine them, but the total will count some of the same money twice. Rails that only settle other rows' flows (CLS, Fedwire, CHIPS, T2) are covered in the thesis, not added here.

Price levers

The XRP free to provide liquidity. It defaults to the live count of XRP in tracked exchange wallets (about 21B per xrp-insights.com; other trackers report 1.6B to 14B), which is also the float Claver describes as shrinking. It is a custody figure: only a small part sits in order books at any moment, so treat it as an upper bound. Escrow, long-term holders, ETFs and lost coins are outside it.
Extra order-book depth beyond the bare in-flight amount, so large trades don't move the price. This multiple is our assumption; there is no published industry rule for it.
How many times the float turns over per day. It defaults to today's rate: exchange-held XRP turns over about 0.15× a day. Pair a large float with low turnover and a small float with higher turnover. Higher turnover reduces the price needed for a given flow.
